Background of the Study
Male reproductive health remains a critical but often overlooked aspect of public health education and healthcare services globally. In many developing countries, including Nigeria, reproductive health education for men is largely neglected, despite its significant role in the prevention of diseases, enhancement of sexual health, and promotion of overall well-being (Oluwole & Sani, 2023). At Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Makurdi, efforts to promote male reproductive health have included nurse-led educational programs aimed at raising awareness about issues such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), family planning, and prostate health.
The role of nurses in male reproductive health education is essential, as they serve as direct communicators between the healthcare system and the male population, which traditionally faces cultural barriers to discussing reproductive health issues (Adeola & Bello, 2023). These educational programs can have a profound effect on improving knowledge, changing perceptions, and encouraging healthier behaviors related to reproductive health among men. However, there is a lack of empirical evidence regarding the specific impact of nurses' involvement in male reproductive health education, especially at FMC Makurdi.
This study seeks to evaluate the effect of nurses' involvement in male reproductive health education at FMC Makurdi. It aims to measure the changes in male patients’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors concerning reproductive health following these educational interventions.
Statement of the Problem
In Nigeria, male reproductive health education is often limited by cultural stigma, lack of awareness, and minimal inclusion in general healthcare outreach programs (Eze & Musa, 2023). Nurses at FMC Makurdi are engaged in providing education on male reproductive health, but the lack of systematic evaluation makes it difficult to determine the effectiveness of these interventions in improving male health outcomes. This gap in understanding prevents the full utilization of nursing interventions to address male reproductive health challenges, particularly in preventing conditions such as prostate cancer and STIs, and improving family planning and sexual health practices.
This study aims to evaluate the effect of nurses' involvement in male reproductive health education at FMC Makurdi, providing valuable data on the effectiveness of such programs in enhancing male reproductive health awareness.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the impact of nurses’ involvement in male reproductive health education on the knowledge and attitudes of male patients at FMC Makurdi.
2. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led educational interventions in improving male reproductive health behaviors.
3. To recommend strategies for enhancing male reproductive health education within the nursing practice at FMC Makurdi.
Research Questions
1. How does nurses’ involvement in male reproductive health education impact male patients' knowledge and attitudes at FMC Makurdi?
2. What is the effect of nurse-led male reproductive health education on male reproductive health behaviors?
3. What strategies can improve the delivery of male reproductive health education by nurses at FMC Makurdi?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses' involvement in male reproductive health education significantly improves male patients’ knowledge and attitudes toward reproductive health.
2. Nurse-led male reproductive health education significantly improves male reproductive health behaviors, including STI prevention and family planning practices.
3. Lack of male engagement and cultural barriers limit the effectiveness of nurse-led male reproductive health education.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the male reproductive health education provided by nurses at FMC Makurdi. It will not assess other healthcare professionals' roles in reproductive health education. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining accurate data due to cultural sensitivities and possible biases in male participants’ self-reported behavior.
